Since its founding in 1901, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles has become a global resource for pediatric clinical care, research and teaching. Its residency program has trained outstanding pediatricians, many of whom now hold prominent positions in academic institutions and communities around the world. The faculty, administration and staff of CHLA are committed to excellence in residency and medical education.

With its medical staff of more than 800 dedicated pediatricians and surgeons, including a full-time faculty of more than 200, CHLA is a major pediatric referral center. Each year, the hospital cares for about 12,000 inpatients and receives over 250,000 outpatient visits. The emergency room alone sees more than 50,000 patients a year.

Every pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty is represented at CHLA, giving residents a rich training experience. Fellows, faculty and staff are available for consultation, but the diagnostic workup and treatment plans are implemented by the residents themselves.

The educational program at CHLA, one of the best in the country, is constantly being evaluated, modified and strengthened. Our curriculum allows ample time for elective rotations in many primary care and specialty areas, including the opportunity to participate in clinical research and in managed care settings. The program prepares physicians equally well to enter general pediatric practice or subspecialty fellowship training.

The philosophy of the CHLA Pediatric Residency Program is to give the resident broad practical experience in caring for children with a wide spectrum of pediatric diagnoses. It offers excellent training in pediatrics and is designed to meet this goal while respecting the personal lives and time of residents.

The hospital’s proximity to the world’s leading recreational and entertainment centers as well as all terrains and climates make it an ideal choice for balancing professional, educational and personal goals.

CHLA has a rich tradition of community service and family-centered care. Its central location in Los Angeles affords it the opportunity to care for children and families from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, often “serving the underserved.”

Though our program is large, there is a high esprit de corps and camaraderie among the residents and between residents and faculty. Ours is a team-oriented approach to patient care, supported by a caring nursing staff, a dedicated Child Life program and therapists in several key disciplines.

We invite you to visit our pediatric residency training program and experience for yourself the valuable aspects of our program.
