Visiting Student Clerkships
 

Students in good academic standing in their senior year in schools of medicine, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (US and Canada only) and accredited schools of osteopathic medicine (US and Canada only), may apply for clinical clerkships at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California for a maximum of eight weeks.

Requirements
The following is required to be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs to be considered for a Visiting Student Clerkship:

  1. Printed Online Application Form Endorsed by the appropriate official at your medical school, stating that you are in good standing and a 4th year medical student
  2. Official Medical School Transcript
  3. $70 Non – Refundable Application Processing Fee (make checks payable to Keck School of Medicine -  USC)
  4. Malpractice Insurance Coverage Policy (Not available through USC)
  5. Letter of Good Standing from your Medical School.  The letter must include the following:
    1. 4th year student in good standing, eligible for elective
    2. Malpractice Limits
    3. Verification of Health Insurance
    4. OSHA training - All medical students must have completed a documented medical program on universal precautions ensuring the appropriate handling of blood, tissue and body fluids (OSHA).
    5. Verification of Completion of HIPAA training
    6. Other hazardous materials, infectious disease, or safety measure trainings/certifications.

Processing Timeframe
Any application received without all documents and application fee will not be processed.  All arrangements for scheduling your clerkship will be handled by the Visiting Clerkship Coordinator, Bobby Kasbekar (bobby.kasbekar@keck.usc.edu), Office of Student Affairs.  Please allow 8-10 weeks for processing.  Do not contact the clerkship program departments directly.  The Office of Student Affairs will handle all scheduling of your clerkship.

Health Clearances
If approved for a clerkship at Keck, each student is then required to complete a health clearance form and an immunization record form.  The forms must be faxed to Student Health upon receiving notice of approval.  Visiting students commencing clerkships at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California will be charged a $30 student health service fee payable to the USC Student Health Service at the time of the clerkship.

Other Clerkship Information
The clerkships are scheduled at the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center.  Clerkships are offered beginning every Monday throughout the year unless otherwise noted on the rotation list.

If offered an elective clerkship, you are obligated to make a firm commitment to accept the rotation and not withdraw except in extreme emergency (in which this case please notify the Visiting Clerkship Coordinator immediately).

Applications will be accepted beginning on May 1st for the following academic year.  Please remember that the application process can take up to 8 weeks so please apply well months in advance.

Housing
Please note that the Keck School of Medicine is unable to provide or arrange housing, board or travel expenses.  No stipend is provided during this clerkship.   Although we do not offer formal housing placement, you may email the Visiting Student Coordinator, Bobby Kasbekar (bobby.kasbekar@keck.usc.edu) with “Visiting Housing” in the subject line.  We occasionally know of nearby housing options.
